Gaga's first album, "The Fame", was released in 2008 with little radio attention. Gaga then toured Europe and played in gay clubs throughout the US in support of The Fame album. After a performance in Toronto caused her to be unable to walk and suffering from severe pain and in a lot of pain, she was admitted to a hospital for surgery, and the tour was canceled.
